## Caption

A 7.4-magnitude earthquake hit western Colombia on Monday, with the powerful quake shaking as far as neighboring Ecuador, prompting evacuations and killing at least 111 people.

The epicenter of the earthquake has been reported by the U.S. Geological Survey in San Jose Del Palmar, a municipality in the Choco region with around 4,800 people, located around 250 miles west of Colombia's capital of Bogotá.

The USGS said the earthquake struck at a depth of 66 miles and was felt as far as Ecuador and Panama, though minimal damage was reported there.

Local officials confirmed at least 40 people were killed in the Risaralda region and 27 people in the Valle del Cauca region. Risaralda is where the hard-hit city of Pereira is located and Valle del Cauca is where Colombia's third-biggest city of Cali is located.

The governor said at least three of those killed in Valle del Cauca were children. 

Local authorities also confirmed four people were killed in Choco and two more in Manizales in the Caldas region. Many across the country were injured.

Choco Governor Nubia Córdoba wrote on social media early after the earthquake that in the regional capital "there are injuries and serious damage to buildings."

Cities west of the country, including Pereira, Quibdo, Cali and Manizales, were ravaged by the quakes, with residents and search teams combing the rubble of collapsed buildings as authorities stressed concerns of aftershocks.
