Taj Chunawala ‘28 spent a few weeks out west this summer with @9thseat, working on his own coxing and leadership skills while also helping the next generation of coxs level up. Here’s what he had to say about the experience:

“Working with Mary Whipple this summer at her annual Coxswain Leadership Camp at the University of Washington was invaluable. Over two week-long sessions — 30 high school coxswains the first week, 17 the second — Whipple, I, and two other D1 varsity coxswains ran a program covering boat feel and rigging, practice management, and race strategy. In just five days each, we gave these coxswains the tools to push to the next level, whether that meant a varsity seat at their home club or getting recruited to college.

The camp gave me a new perspective on coxing. From in the boat, I got to row and watch junior coxswains make decisions in real time. From the launch, I watched Whipple run a practice and saw firsthand how an efficient coxswain keeps a workout on schedule. Coaching these athletes also pushed me to think through how I’d handle the same situations myself, and having Whipple there meant I could ask her directly — including about how she navigated similar moments during her Olympic cycles.

I loved learning from someone who shaped the sport, and I’m excited to bring lessons learned back with me to Wisconsin next year.”
