Did you know that each year, the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food (UDAF) participates in the National Honey Bee Disease Survey (NHBS)? This important nationwide effort, coordinated by the USDA, monitors the health of honey bee colonies across the United States and plays a vital role in protecting pollinators and agricultural ecosystems.

Through UDAF’s Apiary Program, and in collaboration with commercial and sideliner beekeepers across the state, entomologists like Jenna Crowder at UDAF visit apiaries to assess colony health. During the survey, they carefully inspect brood patterns and bee behavior, collecting approximately 300 adult bees and samples of brood comb from selected colonies. These samples are preserved and sent to the USDA Bee Research Laboratory in Beltsville, Maryland, where scientists test for pests, pathogens, and diseases such as Varroa mites, Nosema, viruses, and American foulbrood.

The data collected from this survey is essential for identifying regional and national trends in honey bee health. It supports science-based decision-making, guides management practices, and gives beekeepers valuable insights into emerging health threats in their hives. Most importantly, it helps strengthen pollinator populations that are critical to Utah’s agriculture, biodiversity, and food security.
