America's strategy to slow China down just collapsed.

For years, the US blocked China from buying the world's most advanced chip-making machine, a lithography machine, essentially the world's most sophisticated printer for imprinting circuits onto chips.

Only ASML, in the Netherlands, truly mastered building the best ones. 

No machine, no advanced chips. That was the strategy.

Last week it changed. A Chinese company called Shanghai Aishengna started producing its own advanced lithography machine, with engineers reportedly linked to Huawei, the same company the US spent years trying to block.

China hasn't caught up yet, expected to build around 5 this year versus ASML's 130. 

But ASML's stock still dropped 12% in two days.

The global chip race depended on keeping this machine away from China. 

That strategy may not hold forever.
