High praise for a photographer is when someone says, “wow you don’t miss”.

When someone is kind enough to tell me that, I’m flattered but have to laugh to myself.

Because I miss all the time.

For those in the back, I’ll say it louder:

I miss. All. The. Time.

The first image in this carousel features Seattle’s Jordan Washington bringing down Dallas receiver Jordan Hudson after a reception.

Now swipe, and you’ll see the frames before it.

First frame? Too tight. Was using a 400mm on a play right in front of me. Then too soft. An arm blocking a face. Bodies in the wrong places.

But I keep shooting through the play and eventually, I get a cleaner frame. You can see his face, the composition works and, while it certainly won’t win any contests, it’s a decent frame.

Of the 4,420 frames I made from player arrivals to postgame press conferences, I deleted 2972 of them. Kept 1,440. Transmitted around 200 to my editor. Maybe 50 made a gallery.

There are 20 frames in the burst. One made this post.

(Along with a bunch of the misses including two “bonus” misses at the end)

I miss all the time. I just keep searching for moments, pressing the shutter, and trying to make a great frame. Eventually, some pretty good ones find their way into my camera — even on days when I don’t hit “great.”

The takeaway? Go easy on yourselves. Can’t go back in time and make it better.

As players say, “win some, learn some”.

I started this daily photo journal of training camp to sharpen my seeing, spark my creativity and prepare for the season and now that preseason games have begun, this will be the final entry.

I’m incredibly grateful to all of you who have followed along, commented, asked questions and shared your own experiences. I hope something along the way helps you see a little differently, too.

It’s been fun, challenging and sometimes frustrating, but I think I got better.

Keep seeing. Keep shooting. Tell stories.

Try to make one great photo today.
