Day 15 of Seahawks training camp, and another entry in my daily visual journal.

I started this project because I’d been feeling that my work was “flat”, so I wanted to challenge myself to make an interesting, storytelling photograph every day of training camp. Prepare for the season by sharpening my skills, similar to the players.

Today’s lesson: see the entire field.

Seeing the entire field is a skill all quarterbacks are taught. They need to read the defense pre- and post-snap, process coverages and know where the open receivers are. Staring down one receiver is a recipe for an interception because the defense knows where the ball is going.

I’ve been reminding myself to “see the entire field” during training camp as well.

In the middle of a hot and humid practice, I saw offensive lineman Mason Richman pouring water over his head to try to beat the heat. This image won’t win any awards, and heck, it’s not even close to the best “training camp water splash” photo.

But that’s not really the point.

When covering sports, it’s easy to become locked into the action happening on the field. We all love making a killer action frame, but storytelling also means occasionally taking your eye away from all of that and looking around.

Despite there being no football in the frame, we understand what’s going on. It’s a reminder that football isn’t just where the ball is.

Storytelling is at the essence of everything I do with a camera in my hands. My earliest mentors taught me that details not only matter — they tell stories.

What are the players doing between reps? What’s happening on the sidelines? In the stands?

That’s part of what I’m trying to teach myself with this project: don’t just look where you think you should look.

See the entire field.

Fifteen days in, I’m still experimenting, still missing pictures, finding others, and still trying to see a little more than I did the day before.
