This is the second entry in my Grounding Tool Series, where we are walking through everyday objects and Ideas hat can help when anxiety shows up, and you need something to help you recenter yourself.

Next up is one you might not expect: A Single Chess Piece.

I have used chess pieces for years as a way to slow my mind down when I begin to get overwhelmed due to my anxiety, and when it wants me to react before I can think. I love playing chess, but obviously, I can not carry a whole chess board around with me into meetings, while driving, and so on. 

But a single chess piece I can absolutely take with me everywhere I go. This can fit in your pocket, backpack, or purse, and the solid, textured feel of it in your hand can do the same job the full game does. But in this case, it's something you can easily pack and keep close to you for when you need it. 

The chess piece is a simple tool that works whether you're in a meeting, sitting in class, working through a stressful decision, or preparing for a competition of some sort. It's easy to find, inexpensive, and a great way to redirect your mind to where it needs to be or where you want it to go.
