A tiny San Francisco startup called Nori Robotics has released what it says is the first genuinely useful home robot priced under 2,000 dollars. The company, founded by a Columbia University computer science student and backed by Y Combinator, is charging 1,688 dollars for a wheeled, two-armed robot with 19 degrees of freedom, six to eight hours of battery life, and the ability to lift as much as 55 kilograms vertically. The advertised task list includes pulling food out of the refrigerator, loading a dishwasher, pouring drinks, and folding clothes. Nori also comes with a Skill Marketplace, where owners can train the robot to perform new chores and share those trained skills with other Nori owners around the world. The pitch has gone viral on X, but the reaction has been split. Many viewers pointed out that in the demonstration video, several tasks did not appear to be executed cleanly, with the robot appearing to hover over onions without actually stirring them and coffee never quite making it into a cup. Other commenters saw a bigger picture, noting a robot at this price could be genuinely useful for elderly or disabled people who rely on home care. The company says first units have already shipped and pre-orders for the Fall 2026 batch are open with a 200 dollar deposit. Whether Nori lives up to its marketing is the real question the market and its early buyers are about to answer.
