Iran is losing control of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most strategically important waterways on Earth. According to reporting from CNN and shipping data from Kpler, more than 80% of liquid tanker transits over the past two weeks have taken the UN-authorized route along the north coast of Oman under the protection of the U.S. Navy, while Iran's preferred route is being largely abandoned. Homayoun Falakshahi, head of crude oil analysis at Kpler, told CNN, "It increasingly looks like Iran has at least partially lost control of the strait." Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE are using very large crude carriers to move oil through the strait and then transferring it to customer tankers outside the danger zone. Some tankers have gone as far as switching off their transponders for weeks at a time, creating what analysts call "dark traffic" to evade Iranian tracking. Iran's ability to collect tolls from ships passing through has been crushed. Dan Pickering, founder and chief investment officer of Pickering Energy Partners, said that Iran's aim now appears to be "deterrence" rather than control, and that Iran was "never completely in control to start with." U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright says oil flows out of the Middle East have climbed back to roughly pre-war levels thanks to coordination between the U.S. military and Gulf allies, with newly upgraded pipelines and export facilities moving 5 to 7 million barrels of oil per day out of the region. President Trump has publicly claimed "total control" of the strait, and just threatened to bomb Oman if it "gets in the way" of his administration's talks with Iran. A 60-day U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding expired Monday without a broader peace deal. Brent crude is trading around $91.92 and WTI around $84.97, up for a fourth straight session as Hormuz uncertainty keeps supply risk elevated. The Strait of Hormuz carries roughly a fifth of the world's oil. Whoever ends up controlling it will control the global price of energy.
