Bob and his 78-year-old wife bring in more than 7,000 dollars a month, but they have zero dollars saved for retirement, still owe roughly 267,000 dollars on their mortgage, and are carrying about 40,000 dollars in consumer debt spread across a vehicle loan, credit cards, and a recent roof replacement. Bob told Dave Ramsey and co-host Rachel Cruze that the root cause is his wife's compulsive spending, a pattern he described as constant and cyclical, with genuine remorse after each shopping spree followed by another one the moment the next paycheck lands. Cruze said the behavior sounded bigger than a budgeting issue and recommended the wife seek professional help. Ramsey went a step further, telling Bob he had never actually told his wife no, and coached him through the exact conversation he believed Bob needed to have. Ramsey proposed a one-month experiment where the couple agrees on a written budget together, with a hard consequence attached if the spending does not stop, Bob shuts down every account and moves the money into his own name to protect the household. The most surprising takeaway from the whole call is that with more than 7,000 dollars a month coming in, Ramsey believes this couple can actually eliminate their consumer debt relatively quickly once the leaks are plugged.
