K.C. Current F Michelle Cooper became the first player to come forward criticizing the policy after receiving a fine for wearing New Balance cleats during a game against Gotham FC.

The league has begun enforcing a long-standing provision connected to its league-wide Nike apparel agreement that limits brand visibility. Footwear companies outside the existing arrangement must enter into an agreement with the NWSL if they want their logos displayed by players.
