there is something so fascinating about michelle pfeiffer’s catwoman that i don’t think i’ll ever fully comprehend 

selina kyle isn’t introduced as some effortlessly cool superheroine. she’s awkward, lonely, overlooked and constantly trying to make herself smaller in a world that barely notices she’s there. she’s the woman bringing coffee to the men in the room, nervously trying to speak up, talking to herself because honestly… who else is she supposed to talk to?

then max shreck throws her out of a window, and instead of dying, she comes back completely unhinged, starting the chaos that is the batman returns iteration of catwoman

what i love most is that she isn’t suddenly cured of everything that made her her. she’s still kooky as hell, but decided she’s not going to be invisible anymore.

selina becomes this chaotic, sexually liberated, slightly feral little menace who is simultaneously hilarious, terrifying, deeply sad and somehow one of the most magnetic characters in the entire batman universe.

michelle pfeiffer’s physicality, voice, little mannerisms, the way she switches between selina and catwoman… it is genuinely such a bizarre and brilliant performance. she makes you believe that these are two versions of the same woman fighting for control of her own life.

the movie itself wasn’t exactly what audiences were expecting.

batman returns is dark, violent, sexual, grotesque and genuinely CAMP in its whole definition. audiences were divided by the film’s tone, but decades later, it has been completely reappraised and become a genuine cult classic, with pfeiffer’s catwoman now widely regarded as one of the definitive portrayals of the character.
