Ricardo Fujii transforms photography into a delicate and profound art form. In his project “Illumina” (meaning illuminate in Portuguese), he captures images through an extraordinary experiment with plasma and smoke. Here’s how it works: an incense stick is placed at the center of a circle of people, who meditate on a word that represents a sensation or focus. Together, they speak the word aloud, and in that moment, the smoke is photographed—resulting in stunning images that reflect the collective energy and intention.

Fujii’s work resonates with the legacy of Japanese researcher Masaru Emoto, whose “Messages of Water” project demonstrated the effect of human thoughts, feelings, and even music on water crystals. Each crystal Emoto photographed changed form based on the vibrations it was exposed to—from pristine and clear to murky and distorted.

Both artists remind us of the power of words, thoughts, and collective energy. Fujii materializes words through smoke, while Emoto did so through water—each creating a profound connection to the beauty of the human spirit.
