A group comprising members of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Geological Survey, Massachusetts Fish and Wildlife and UMass students has been surveying the bottom of the Connecticut River for the past three days, researching the freshwater mussel species that inhabit the river’s floor. The team is aiding in a combined effort to better understand and document the local species and mussels as a whole.

1. U.S. Fish and Wildlife worker Tim Warren holds a yellow lampmussel while surveying near Holyoke. The yellow lampmussel is an endangered species within the state and is federally listed as threatened.

3. Aquatic Biologist Jason Carmignani, right, measures the size and age of an eastern elliptio freshwater mussel near Holyoke. Size is measured by length, whereas age is determined by the rings on the outer shell.

4. Members of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Geological Survey, Massachusetts Fish and Wildlife and UMass students boat along the river. Today’s crew is made of roughly 15 members.
