We spontaneously decided to take the kids on a three-mile hike to visit Cathedral Cavern, up some steep hills, with no carrier and absolutely no idea how it was going to go.

Normally, we’d have said absolutely not. 😂

But the kids were incredible. Something about being here seemed to put an extra spring in their steps, and they threw themselves into the challenge.

We met some lovely people along the way, and somehow made it back to the car with two very tired but very happy little explorers.

Then Rupert quietly sat in the boot and wrote us a little note:

“Mummy and Daddy. This is the best day ever. Thank you.” ❤️

We sobbed! 🥹

Maybe because this whole week has felt like a week of firsts for us as parents.

The first time the kids have shared a room for a whole week without waking each other up all night.

The first time the work laptops have stayed firmly shut.

The first time we’ve properly hiked as a family.

And the first time Poppy has been old enough - and apparently tall enough 😂 - to join in with all the adventures.

For the first time in a long time, it felt like we weren’t just surviving a family holiday. We were properly enjoying it. Exploring, trying new things and making memories together.

They’ve suddenly become big enough to do things you never thought they’d manage, and you realise that the world has opened up a little bit again.

To all the parents currently in the thick of sleepless nights, nappies, tantrums and wondering when life will feel a little easier…

It does. ❤️

And when it does, it’s pretty brilliant.
