For the past month, we’ve talked a lot about the possibility of the United States defaulting on its debt and the implications that could have.
But that outcome looks less likely after the Republican-controlled House and President Biden reached a tentative deal to increase the nation’s debt ceiling and avoid a default.

The bill still needs to pass the House and Senate, which is far from a certainty. MAGA Republicans have criticized the bill for not making big enough cuts to key programs, while many Democrats oppose the bill’s new work requirements for certain recipients of federal food aid.

The deal could actually expand the number of people getting aid through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, however, as it boosts access for veterans and homeless people and exempts them from the work requirements.
A House vote on the bill is expected Wednesday, with a Senate vote to follow.
