Inside IBM’s new cryogenic modules, the gold isn’t decoration. Each plated stage is a temperature floor, stepping down from room temperature at the top to below 15 millikelvin at the bottom, more than 180 times colder than deep space. All that wiring is the point: each module’s vacuum enclosure carries up to 12 times more wiring space than IBM’s most widely used quantum systems, room the company needs to link separate quantum chips into one machine. IBM just joined and cooled two of these modules as a single environment for the first time, a step toward Starling, the fault-tolerant quantum computer it plans to deliver in 2029.
