It’s #WorldOrangutanDay 🦧🌿

Today, we’re excited to celebrate some very special Guardians of the Rainforest - the seven Sumatran orangutans who call your Toronto Zoo home: Puppe, Ramai, Sekali, Jingga, Budi, Kembali and Wali! From curious and confident Puppe to four-year-old Wali, each member of this incredible family has a unique personality and an important role as an ambassador for their wild counterparts.

Are you aware? Your Toronto Zoo is proud to be the only zoo in Canada caring for Sumatran orangutans, connecting our guests and members with this remarkable species while contributing to conservation efforts here at home and in Sumatra. There may be no better place to make that connection than “Orangutans of Gunung Leuser – Guardians of the Rainforest”, our world-class outdoor orangutan habitat.

At 13,000 square feet, this state-of-the-art space gives the orangutans opportunities to climb as high as 75 feet above the ground, explore varied terrain, navigate ropes and climbing structures, and make choices about how they interact with their environment. The habitat also incorporates a dedicated Research Station, helping our Welfare Science team learn more about these intelligent and fascinating great apes.

Those connections are more important than ever. The Sumatran orangutan is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, with fewer than 15,000 remaining in the wild. Approximately 95% live within the Greater Leuser Ecosystem on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, where habitat loss and fragmentation continue to threaten their future.

Orangutans are often called Guardians of the Rainforest for good reason. As important seed dispersers, they help maintain healthy tropical forests and the incredible diversity of life that depends on them. Protecting orangutans means protecting an entire ecosystem 🌳

This World Orangutan Day, we invite you to learn more about the choices we can all make to help protect orangutans in the wild, including choosing products made with sustainable palm oil, and about your Toronto Zoo’s long-term support of the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP).
