There’s still time to recycle your old cell phones (and other electronics!) and support great ape conservation 🦍📱♻️

Our annual e-waste recycling campaign wraps up September 7, 2026 and with a new school year approaching, now is the time to give those old phones, tablets, computers and other electronics a new purpose!

Do you ever wonder what happens to your old electronics (also known as e-waste)? Every year, nearly 1.3 million cell phones end up in landfills. Over 50 million tonnes of e-waste is produced every year, and only 15–20% of it is recycled properly. The remaining electronics are sent directly to landfill. Electronics contain valuable and potentially hazardous materials that need to be recycled properly ♻️

Here at your Toronto Zoo, and thanks to our guests and members, we have collected 60,433 cellphones, 69 tonnes of general e-waste, and have raised over $39,000.

Did you know? We also provide 100% landfill-free recycling for cell phones year-round through the Zoo's Phone Apes program. Be sure to drop your old phones off on your next visit to the Zoo or mail them to:

361A Old Finch Ave
Toronto, ON
M1B 5K7

By recycling your old phones, elements used to create cell phones can be reused, helping reduce the demand for mining in the Congo, home to critically endangered lowland gorillas. 🦍
