During the 1962 Sino-Indian War, Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat of the 4th Garhwal Rifles single-handedly held off the enemy forces at the Battle of Nuranang. Facing overwhelming odds, Jaswant Singh—assisted by two local Monpa girls, Sela and Nura—setup weapons at various positions along the ridge to create the illusion of a full battalion. For 72 hours without sleep or pause, he moved between posts, inflicting over 300 enemy casualties and stalling their advance.

When his position was finally compromised, he fought to his last breath, giving his life for the nation on November 17, 1962, at just 21 years old. Awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, his legacy lives on—he was awarded honorary promotions up to the rank of Captain, and soldiers at Jaswant Garh still serve him as if he were alive today.
