While speaking with Vanity Fair, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II called out Marvel for cancelling Black-led projects such as ‘Blade’ and ‘Wonder Man.’

“If I’m a big business, if I’m Disney, if I’m Marvel, I don’t want to be attached to these optics,” Yahya told the outlet. “So it should be a priority to change that narrative and to do what it takes to responsibly change that narrative with quality stories, with quality resources.”

‘Blade’ was originally in development at Marvel Studios after Mahershala Ali pitched the project in 2019 as a film he would star in. However, due to a number of setbacks, including creative differences, multiple director and writer changes, and industry-wide delays, the film was ultimately shelved.

Yahya’s Disney+ series, ‘Wonder Man,’ was reportedly renewed for a second season, but according to the actor, Marvel later reversed its decision because of the show’s audience figures, although he says the studio did not provide him with the actual numbers.
