As a new school year begins, Denver students, families, educators, and communities are preparing for a fresh start. This month, we’re highlighting the organizations working to ensure young people have the support, connection, and resources they need to thrive—both in and out of the classroom. 

Grantee Spotlight: Sims-Fayola Foundation

Sims-Fayola Foundation is creating culturally affirming spaces where boys and young men of color can heal, grow, and thrive. Through mentorship, social-emotional learning, and trauma-informed support, the organization helps participants build resilience, strengthen their sense of identity, and develop the skills to navigate life's challenges.

With support from Caring for Denver, the Sims-Fayola Empowerment Zone (SFEZ) combines mentoring, licensed therapy, substance use screening, restorative practices, and family engagement into a holistic model of care. Youth participate in weekly in-school and out-of-school sessions focused on emotional wellness, leadership, healthy relationships, and personal growth, while licensed therapists provide individual and group counseling, crisis support, and referrals when needed. By integrating clinical care into trusted community spaces, SFEZ makes mental health support more accessible, culturally responsive, and stigma-free.
