William McCracken was a financial consultant for A.G. Edwards in Venice before becoming the city's mayor from 1974 to 1975. 

He was a past president of the Venice Lions Club and the Sarasota County Teachers Association. 

Originally from Kentucky, McCracken lived in Venice for almost 40 years.
