## Caption

Relatively unknown in his lifetime, artist Irving Norman’s rediscovered paintings probe the complexities of modern life. His intricate, monumental canvases are now at #SothebysNewYork in a rare exhibition that spans several decades of his career.

Born in Vilnius, Lithuania, Norman immigrated to the United States with his family in 1923. His artistic vision was largely shaped by his experience fighting with the Lincoln Brigade in the Spanish Civil War. After seeing the devastation the conflict caused, he was inspired to pursue art as a means of grappling with humanity.
