Fifteen masterpieces by Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita will come to #SothebysHongKong this September in the Maison’s first dedicated single-artist auction. Assembled over three decades, The Foujita Lexicon: Works from the Lewis Collection captures his legacy as one of the most original artists of the 20th century.

This collection traces six decades of Foujita’s career across geographies and mediums, demonstrating his unique fusion of Japanese and European artistic traditions. It offers a rare survey of one of the most distinctive figures of the School of Paris.

The Foujita Lexicon: Works from the Lewis Collection heads to auction on 28 September. See the full collection and register to bid at the link in bio.

Painted in 1924, at the height of Foujita’s celebrated Paris years, ‘Mon portrait’ embodies his Montparnasse persona. It shows the artist as he emerged as a leading figure of the School of Paris, presenting the cultural duality that would become the hallmark of his art.

‘Le rêve (Hommage à La Fontaine)’ is one of only four known anthropomorphic paintings made during Foujita’s visit to America from 1949-50. Distinguished by its intimacy and delicacy, the painting exemplifies Foujita’s mastery in depicting the animal world with both sensitivity and refinement.

‘Madeleine endormie’ holds particular significance for the Lewis family as the first Foujita they acquired in 1992. The drawing sparked a lifelong passion for the artist and laid the foundation for what would become one of the most important private collections of Foujita’s work.
