## Caption

“Repeat the same stroke again and again, letting your body memorise the correct form.”

It sounds scientific.

It isn’t.

Gundersen et al. (2018) explicitly described the use of “muscle memory” as a synonym for motor learning as misleading.

Genuine cellular muscle memory does exist but it refers to physiological adaptations within muscle, such as its capacity to respond more quickly to retraining after muscle mass has been lost. It does not mean your muscles store the “correct form” of a tennis stroke (Sharples & Turner, 2023).

Tennis players must continually adapt their actions to changing information ball speed, spin, direction, height, bounce, positioning, intention and opponent behaviour.

Repetition may make a movement feel familiar.

That does not prove the player has developed an adaptable tennis skill.

Follow mytenniscoaching for actual evidence-based coach education not familiar coaching claims dressed up as science.
