Wetherspoons has banned customers from playing music, videos or taking calls out loud on their phone speakers across its 792 pubs.

The pub chain says noise from smartphones and tablets has become an "increasing problem in recent years" following complaints from customers.

Instead, punters are being asked to keep their devices silent or use earphones.

Wetherspoons founder and chairman Tim Martin said: "In a world dominated by other people's music and amplified sound, Wetherspoon pubs are an oasis of tranquillity and contemplation."

He added that customers are being asked to "pipe down" 💀
