Today is #NationalRadioDay, and after more than 40 years behind a microphone, I still don’t take this gift for granted.

Radio has taken me from Chicago to New York City, Atlanta, Miami, and some of the biggest markets in the country. I’ve had a nationally syndicated radio show, worked with incredible stations and people, and experienced more than I could’ve ever imagined when I first started.

But through all of that, what means the most to me is still the people.

Radio has given me the opportunity to reach people, touch lives, build relationships, and serve communities in ways I could’ve never imagined growing up in Chicago.

Today in Lansing, Michigan, home of my flagship show, Mr. Quiet Storm with Rick Party, we gave away 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to local kids.

Seeing those children, their parents, the smiles, the gratitude, it took me right back to my own humble beginnings.

I’m proud of my friend and program director Brion O’Brion, proud of the entire staff, and grateful for Mac, the owner of the station cluster. This man is in his 70s, dressed in a suit, and still out there carrying backpacks, moving signs and doing the work with everybody else.

That reminded me of something important.

No matter what we’ve done or where we’ve been, none of us should ever think we’re too big to serve people.

That’s what National Radio Day means to me.

The microphone is more than something we talk into. It’s a vessel, a responsibility and a chance to make somebody’s day a little better.

And after more than four decades, from major markets to national syndication and everything in between, I’m still most grateful for the chance to connect with people and give something back.

Happy National Radio Day.
