Just outside visitdesmet, where Laura Ingalls Wilder once lived, you can experience life on the prairie much as it was in the 1880s. Ride through the grasslands in a covered wagon, spend time in a one-room schoolhouse, meet the farm animals and have a go at pioneer skills like rope making, washing clothes by hand and grinding wheat.

It’s hands-on, wonderfully nostalgic and a chance to see a side of South Dakota’s history that helped inspire one of America’s most beloved stories.

If you really want the full experience, you can even spend the night in a covered wagon beneath South Dakota’s star-filled skies.
