With #COP17 underway in Mongolia, UNESCO is highlighting how pastoralists' knowledge can help safeguard biodiversity, soil and water. Built over generations, this living knowledge remains a vital resource for the future.

Pastoralist communities have developed a deep understanding of the land, from changing weather patterns and water sources to ecosystem health and wildlife movements. UNESCO works alongside these communities to document, safeguard and strengthen the transmission of this knowledge.

Many pastoralist communities live in UNESCO-designated sites, including World Heritage sites, Biosphere Reserves and UNESCO Global Geoparks. Through research and the safeguarding of transhumance as living heritage, UNESCO supports the recognition and transmission of pastoralists' knowledge.
