Third-ranked Vanderbilt made a statement in its first top-25 test of the season Friday night, pouncing on No. 21 Memphis 4-1 at Vanderbilt Soccer Complex for its third consecutive win to open the campaign. The Commodores controlled the match nearly wire to wire, leading for 77 minutes and putting all eight of their shots on frame in a clinical attacking display.

Courtney Jones got the Commodores rolling with a long-range strike to cap a flowing team move, with Melania Fullerton and Sydney Watts picking up the assists. Memphis thought it had an equalizer through Yuna Nagata, but the goal was overturned for shielding the goalkeeper from an offside position, and Vanderbilt made the Tigers pay on the cusp of halftime when a Jones corner kick caused chaos in the box and ricocheted off a Memphis defender into the net for a 2-0 lead.

The Commodores kept their foot down right out of the break. Less than four minutes of game time after the second goal, Margo Matula finished off another Jones cross to make it 3-0 in the 47th minute, and Watts added the fourth in the 54th, running onto a slick outside-of-the-foot pass from Reagan Pentz for her third goal in as many games. The strike moved the senior into a tie for sixth in program history with 28 career goals. Memphis pulled one back through Natalie Dvorakova in the 88th, but the night belonged to the Commodores, who forced five saves from the Tigers' keeper and improved to 9-3 in ranked matches since 2025, including a 7-1 mark at home.
