December 2, 1995 Steve Spurrier's second-ranked Florida Gators completed the first undefeated, untied regular season in school history, dispatching Arkansas 34 to 3 to claim their third straight SEC championship and fourth in five years, and earn a national title showdown with No. 1 Nebraska in the Fiesta Bowl. The win made Florida just the second program ever to win three consecutive SEC titles, joining Bear Bryant's Alabama, while the Razorbacks made history of their own as the first team other than Alabama or Florida to reach the league's showcase game, winning the West in just their fourth SEC season. Arkansas came out swinging, grinding out a 16-play, 65-yard opening drive that ate up more than half the first quarter before the Florida defense stiffened, forcing a 37-yard Todd Latourette field goal for a 3-to-0 Razorback lead. Danny Wuerffel answered immediately, completing his first five passes and finding Chris Doering in the right corner of the end zone from 22 yards out to put the Gators ahead 7-to-3. After a Teako Brown interception, Wuerffel marched Florida right back down and sneaked in from the 1, and a Bart Edmiston field goal sent the Gators to the half up 17-to-3 against a blitzing, stunting Arkansas defense that refused to let them pull away. Wuerffel stretched the lead to 24-3 on a 29-yard touchdown strike to Ike Hilliard in the third quarter, but the play of the game belonged to the defense. With Arkansas facing fourth-and-1 from the Florida 3 and threatening to make it a two-score game, tackle David Barnard hit Barry Lunney behind the line, the quarterback's desperation pitch fell into the hands of senior captain Ben Hanks, and the nickelback sprinted 95 yards untouched the other way. Spurrier called the play the moment that gave Florida the championship for sure, and the Gators tacked on a late field goal to close out the 34-3 final. Wuerffel was named the game's MVP after completing 20 of 28 passes for 276 yards and two touchdowns, one year before he'd return to the Georgia Dome to win the Heisman Trophy, and the Florida defense forced four turnovers on the night. Danny Ford tipped his cap afterward, saying his outmatched Razorbacks needed to play nearly perfectly and that the mistake-free Gators were simply the better team.
