Few rivalries in college football carry the history, tradition and pure animosity of Tennessee and Alabama. Played nearly every year since 1901 and long anchored to the third Saturday in October, the series has produced legendary coaches, iconic plays, and a victory cigar tradition unlike anything else in the sport. Relive some of the greatest moments from one of the SEC's defining rivalries.

The drama spans generations. In 1982, Johnnie Jones and the Volunteers snapped an 11-game losing streak to Alabama with a 35-28 upset in Knoxville, handing Bear Bryant a loss in his final Third Saturday in October. In 1995, Peyton Manning hit Joey Kent for an 80-yard touchdown on the game's first play from scrimmage, igniting a 41-14 rout that ended nearly a decade of Alabama dominance in the series. The 2003 meeting in Tuscaloosa needed five overtimes to decide a winner, and in 2009, Terrence Cody's blocked field goal as time expired — the "Rocky Block" — preserved Alabama's undefeated national championship season. In 2022, Chase McGrath's field goal as the clock hit zero gave Tennessee a 52-49 instant classic at Neyland Stadium, sending the goalposts into the Tennessee River. And in 2025, Zabien Brown returned an interception 99 yards for a touchdown as time expired in the first half, turning a Tennessee scoring threat at the Alabama 2-yard line into a 23-7 halftime lead and propelling the Crimson Tide to victory at Bryant-Denny Stadium. 

Whether it ends with cigars in the locker room in Knoxville or Tuscaloosa, the Third Saturday in October remains one of the fiercest and most celebrated traditions in college football.
