March 16, 2025 Fourth-ranked Florida held off sixth-ranked Tennessee and its heavily partisan home-state crowd, winning 86- 77 in the 2025 SEC Tournament championship game to claim the program's fifth SEC Tournament title and first since 2014. Senior point guard Walter Clayton Jr. led the way with 22 points, hitting seven of 18 shots including four three-pointers to go with five rebounds, and was named the event's Most Outstanding Player after leading Florida in scoring in all three tournament games. Four other Gators reached double figures, with senior guard Will Richard adding 17 points, sophomore forward Alex Condon contributing 13 points and nine rebounds, and sophomore Thomas Haugh chipping in 11 points and six rebounds off the bench. Grad guard Alijah Martin rounded out the group with 10 points, four rebounds and an emphatic slam dunk in the closing seconds. Tennessee refused to go away quietly, with point guard Zakai Zeigler scoring 23 points to go with eight assists and three steals as the Volunteers kept clawing back into the game. Florida answered each Tennessee push, first with free throws and a Haugh three, then a run of eight straight points capped by Richard free throws, which pushed the Gators' lead to a game-high margin down the stretch. Florida eventually broke Tennessee's full-court pressure late, setting up Martin's exclamation-point finish to close out the win. The victory capped a remarkable turnaround for a Florida team that had been picked to finish anywhere from sixth to ninth in the SEC by preseason prognosticators. Instead, the Gators claimed their first basketball championship of any kind, regular season or tournament, since 2014, improving to 30-4 on the season and earning a No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament.
