December 19, 2020 Top-ranked Alabama outlasted a furious second-half rally from seventh-ranked Florida, winning a shootout 52- 46 to capture the program's ninth SEC title, the seventh under Nick Saban, in a game that shattered records on both sides of the ball. Alabama came out of the gate on fire behind a three-headed attack of Mac Jones, Najee Harris and DeVonta Smith, each making a final case for the Heisman Trophy. The Crimson Tide built a 35 to 17 lead by late in the second quarter, scoring 35 points in the first half alone, the most ever in an SEC Championship Game half. Najee Harris was nearly unstoppable, rushing for 179 yards and two touchdowns while adding five catches for 67 yards and three more scores through the air, finishing with 245 all-purpose yards and five total touchdowns, four of them in the first half. Jones was just as sharp, throwing for a then SEC title game record 418 yards and five touchdowns, connecting with Smith 15 times for 184 yards and two scores. Florida refused to go away. The Gators scored on back-to-back possessions to open the third quarter, cutting the deficit to just four points and giving the Swamp faithful real hope of an upset. Kyle Trask, in the midst of a Heisman-caliber season of his own, finished with 408 passing yards and three touchdowns, while Kadarius Toney added eight catches for 153 yards and a score. But Alabama had an answer every time Florida threatened, reeling off 10 straight points to push the margin back out and eventually holding on through a wild final quarter that saw Florida outscore the Tide 15 to 17 down the stretch. The 52- 46 final made it the highest-scoring game in SEC Championship history at the time, and moved Alabama to 6 wins and 4 losses all-time against Florida in the title game, the two programs having met more than any other pair in the game's history. The win pushed Alabama to a perfect 13- 0 and clinched the top seed in the College Football Playoff. The Crimson Tide went on to beat Notre Dame in the Rose Bowl semifinal and then Ohio State in the national championship game, completing a perfect season and claiming the program's 18th national title.
