Rutgers 1, Tennessee 4
Regal Soccer Stadium, Knoxville, TN. August 13, 2026

24th-ranked Tennessee opened its 2026 season with a 4- 1 win over Rutgers, riding a fast start and multi-goal efforts from two different scorers to hand the Scarlet Knights a difficult season-opening loss.

Tennessee wasted little time getting on the board, as fifth-year senior Kylee Simmons found the net just eight minutes in to give the Lady Vols an early lead. Kai Tsakiris made it 2 to 0 shortly after, and the Volunteers carried that cushion into the second half, with Rutgers managing just two shots in the opening 45 minutes while trailing by two at the break. Simmons struck again in the 67th minute for her second goal of the night, this one set up by transfer forward Taylor Cheatham and fifth-year forward Shae O'Rourke, pushing the lead to 3- 0 and putting the match out of reach with 24 minutes to go.

Rutgers finally got on the board in the 76th minute when senior forward Emma Johns buried one of the Scarlet Knights' four shots on target, becoming the first player to beat Tennessee goalkeeper Cayden Norris all season. Tsakiris answered right back for Tennessee, converting a penalty kick in the closing minutes to make it a 4 to 1 final. Rutgers did show some second-half fight, taking 10 of its 12 shots after the break and finishing level with Tennessee at 6- 6 in corner kicks despite being shut out in that category during the first half.

Rutgers goalkeeper Olivia Bodmer made four saves in the loss, pushing her career total to 214, the ninth most in program history. The match also marked the debut of several newcomers for Rutgers, including freshmen Lilia Calvert, Amanda Thornton, Bea Tinoco and Tommi Rose Valente, along with transfer midfielder Lily Ann Phillips. Rutgers, playing three of its first four matches away from home, next travels to UConn, while Tennessee opened its season 1-0 behind the strong showing from Simmons and Tsakiris.
