Margueritte Bates's tenure at Texas got off to a winning start, as the Longhorns shut out Houston Christian 3 to 0 in the season opener, giving the new head coach her first win in Austin.

Texas wasted no time setting the tone. Just three minutes into the match, veteran Amalia Villarreal put the Longhorns on the board, marking the program's fastest goal to open a season since 2017. Sophomore Sadie Hoch added her second career goal before halftime to extend the lead. Kennedi Cotter, a sophomore transfer from Rutgers, capped the scoring with her first collegiate goal, lacing a shot into the top right corner. Texas dominated the shot chart throughout, outshooting Houston Christian 19 to 3 on the night.

Bates, who arrived in Austin after a four-year run at UCLA that included a national championship as a rookie head coach in 2022 and two Pac-12 Coach of the Year honors, called it a great way to begin the new chapter. She pointed to the excitement of seeing new players get their first minutes in a Texas uniform, with some even scoring their first goals as Longhorns.

The win improved Texas to a perfect start following a difficult 4-12-1 campaign a season ago that led to Bates's hiring. Houston Christian, which returns to Houston to face Texas Southern next, fell to 0-2 all-time against Texas in Austin. Texas looks to build on the early momentum as the Bates era continues to take shape.
