Second-seeded Vanderbilt outlasted fifth-seeded LSU in a marathon penalty shootout, winning 8-7 after the two teams battled to a 1-1 draw through regulation and two overtime periods to claim the 2025 SEC Tournament Championship.

LSU struck first when midfielder Gabbi Ceballos opened the scoring in the 26th minute, heading home a corner kick from six yards out. The Tigers carried that lead deep into the match before Vanderbilt equalized in the 70th minute, with Vivian Akyirem capitalizing on an LSU defensive error to level the score at 1-1. Neither team could find a winner across two extra periods, sending the championship to penalty kicks.

The shootout turned into a marathon of its own. Both goalkeepers were sharp all afternoon, with LSU's Scheving and Vanderbilt's Sara Wojdelko each finishing with five saves across 110 minutes of play. LSU's Amy Smith calmly slotted home a placed shot to keep the Tigers alive late in the shootout, pushing the score to 7-7 after nine rounds. In the tenth round, Vanderbilt's Mary Beth McLaughlin buried a hard grounder into the bottom left corner to make it 8 to 7. LSU's Jazmin Ferguson stepped up needing to match it, but her attempt was saved by Wojdelko, sealing the title for Vanderbilt.

The championship was LSU's second trip to the SEC title match in program history, with the Tigers reaching the finals as the lowest seed to do so since 2020, but they came up just short after winning their program's only prior SEC crown in 2018. For Vanderbilt, the win capped a strong 15-win season and delivered the program's first SEC Tournament title in dramatic fashion.
