2024 SEC Championship Game: Georgia 22, Texas 19 (OT)
Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, GA. December 7, 2024

Kirby Smart's fifth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs pulled off an improbable overtime win over second-ranked Texas, 22 to 19, in the first-ever overtime game in SEC Championship history, claiming the program's third SEC title under Smart despite losing their starting quarterback in the process.

Georgia arrived in Atlanta already riding a wave of late-season drama, having survived an eight-overtime, 44- 42 win over Georgia Tech the week before in the regular-season finale. The Bulldogs then had to navigate an even bigger obstacle in the championship game itself when starting quarterback Carson Beck went down on the final play of the first half with an injured throwing arm. With Georgia struggling to move the ball against Texas, third-year sophomore Gunner Stockton, who had played only six games in his college career, all mop-up duty in blowout wins, came off the bench and led the offense the rest of the way.

Stockton guided Georgia to a touchdown and two field goals to keep the Bulldogs within striking distance. Texas, meanwhile, got a burst of life through the air when Quinn Ewers found DeAndre Moore Jr. on a 41-yard touchdown, and Bert Auburn later kicked a field goal to give Texas its first lead since early in the third quarter. The game went to overtime still unsettled. Stockton picked up a critical first down on Georgia's overtime possession before taking a massive hit that knocked his helmet off and forced him out of the game. That brought Beck back onto the field for one final play, and even though he could barely lift his arm, all he needed to do was hand the ball to Trevor Etienne, who powered it in for the winning score.

The win pushed Georgia to 11- 2 and delivered the program's third SEC title under Smart, while also locking up a first-round bye in the new 12-team College Football Playoff as the No. 2 seed. Smart called his team's resilience the defining trait of the win, telling reporters afterward, "This team never, ever says no." For Texas, the loss in its first season in the SEC was a tough one to swallow. Head coach Steve Sarkisian acknowledged the sting but pointed to the bigger picture ahead, saying the Longhorns would regroup and get into the College Football Playoff to compete for a national championship. Georgia went on to lose to Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl quarterfinal, while Texas earned a playoff berth of its own as the No. 2 CFP seed.
