The word “geyser” actually comes from Iceland 🇮🇸

We stopped at the Geysir Geothermal Area in Haukadalur, as part of Iceland’s famous Golden Circle, and there’s actually a lot more to this place than just the eruption you see in the video.

This whole area is geothermal, so you’ll see boiling hot springs, steaming vents, bubbling pools and, of course, geysers. Basically, there’s a LOT happening underneath the ground here.

And then there’s the Great Geysir - the original one that gave all geysers their name. The word geyser comes from the Icelandic “geysir” (meaning to gush). Great Geysir is mostly dormant today.

The star of the show now is Strokkur, which is just nearby. It’s the active geyser in this area and erupts roughly every 5-10 minutes, sending boiling water up to around 30 metres into the air.

This place is one of those Iceland stops where you realize just how much is happening beneath your feet ♨️💦
