Jim Cornette says he called the Wendy’s collapse years ago.

On Jim Cornette’s Drive-Thru, Cornette pointed to reports that 289 Wendy’s locations closed in the United States in the first half of this year, with same-restaurant sales down 7 percent in the second quarter and the stock down 65 percent over five years.

Cornette said he has been flagging the decline since his traveling days: “They changed their fries, and they changed their meat, and they didn’t squash it enough, and they changed the pickles.”

His verdict: “If Dave Thomas was alive today, he’d be spinning in his grave.”

Brian Last said the quality slipped and became inconsistent, and that the grilled chicken sandwich he relied on is gone. “It’s just not good anymore,” Last said, adding that the Frostys are still good.

For context, Wendy’s is not disputing the problem. President and CEO Bob Wright, who took over in May, said in the company’s second quarter earnings release, “Today we are clearly not performing at our potential,” and has pointed to degraded food quality, a weaker value proposition and pressure on franchisee economics. Wendy’s has launched a turnaround plan called Project Fresh, cut its dividend, and withdrew its 2026 financial outlook while new leadership assesses the business.

Cornette is among the names interviewed for season 7 of Dark Side of the Ring, which continues Tuesday, August 18 at 10 PM ET on Vice TV with “The Walking Riot,” the episode on Missy Hyatt.
