The 2026 Nissan Leaf is the fastest-charging Leaf ever. The old Nissan Leaf S took 35 minutes to add 100 miles of range. The new Nissan Leaf can add that much range in less than 11 minutes. We tested the new Leaf's charging capabilities to see just how much Nissan's entry-level EV has improved.

The 2026 Nissan Leaf comes with a 75kWh battery, delivering 259 to 303 miles of range, depending on which trim you select. The Leaf gets a NACS port for DC fast charging and a 150kW peak charge rate. For comparison, the base 2025 Leaf had a 50kW peak and a CHAdeMO port. Yikes.

To precondition the Leaf's battery pack, you can set a charger as a destination in the navigation, or you can manually enable the battery heater. Unfortunately, the battery heater is a $300 option.

We plugged in and quickly saw the Leaf ramp up to 148kW by the 10% mark. By 15%, the display read 150kW, and a peak of 152kW was achieved by 26%. That peak was held all the way to the 37% mark.

Unfortunately, the Leaf started to taper the charging current pretty significantly, and it dipped to 93kW at the 50% mark. By 52%, the Leaf was down to a measly 59kW. The curve slightly resuscitated, reached 81kW at 57%, and then gradually tapered.

The Leaf hit 50% in 13 minutes and 33 seconds. 80% required 34 minutes and 19 seconds.

In base configuration, the new Leaf can add 100 miles of EPA range in just 10 minutes and 41 seconds. This is right behind the Subaru Uncharted FWD, which needed 10 minutes and 36 seconds.

The Leaf's charging times aren't groundbreaking, but they are a massive step up from the previous generation's poor figures. The new Leaf is finally a worthy vehicle to take on a road trip, thanks to far improved charging speeds and a relevant charge port.
