Claressa Shields is pushing back on a number circulating online that pegs her earnings from her August 15 fight in Atlanta at $500,000. In a post on X, she said the figure people are passing around is the guaranteed base purse that appears on the commission record, not her total compensation, and that her actual earnings include participation in the business of the event itself, meaning gate revenue, sponsorships, and other revenue streams.

She added that she has made over a million per fight since Savannah Marshall and that she currently holds an $8 million deal. Here is why this became a story at all. When a boxer fights, the state athletic commission that sanctions the event collects paperwork, including what the fighters are being paid. Most states keep that private. Georgia is one of the few that still releases it publicly. So when Shields fought at State Farm Arena, the disclosed figure eventually made its way into the open, and social media did what social media does with a number attached to a famous person.

The thing worth understanding is that a disclosed purse and what a fighter actually takes home are usually two different numbers, and often not close. The base purse is the guaranteed floor, the money a fighter gets regardless of how the event performs. On top of that sits the backend, which is the fighter’s cut of ticket sales, streaming buys, sponsorship deals, and whatever else the promotion generates. For a headliner who is also a draw, the backend routinely dwarfs the guarantee.
