August "Gus" Major was ready for some competition.

The 12-year-old from Ankeny had not faced another kid at the Iowa State Fair’s Youth Harmonica Contest since 2023. This year, the field quadrupled.

Among the new entrants were Major’s 9-year-old sister, who learned to play that day, and two cousins whose arrival briefly delayed the contest because they had gone with their aunt Christie to get the one thing every harmonica contestant needs: a harmonica.

Major was delighted.
