5 things every STI generation taught us (and one satisfying L):

1. The GC8 was never supposed to be a street car. Subaru literally built a homologation receipt so they could go rallying, and we all just collectively decided it was the greatest sedan ever made. That's not marketing — that's earned reputation written in gravel and broken axles.

2. The GD (blob eye through hawk eye) is the golden era and it's not close. 2.5L EJ257, DCCD center diff, the steering feel that made you believe Subaru's engineers actually drove their own cars on mountain roads at 2am. If you owned one between 04-07 and didn't blow a ringland, congratulations — you're in the minority and you know it.

3. The GR hatch is the sleeper pick that everyone's finally catching onto. Wider, stiffer, and the last STI that still felt like it wanted to fight you. The fact that clean examples are now commanding GD money tells you everything.

4. The VA got comfortable and that's where the split happened. More refined, better daily, genuinely quick — but somewhere between the sound deadening and the electronic steering rack, the car stopped feeling like it was built by rally engineers and started feeling like it was approved by a focus group. Still a great car. Just a different promise.

5. The EJ is done. Subaru killed the EJ257 and moved on, and no amount of forum nostalgia changes the fact that a motor designed in the late 90s was still spinning rod bearings in 2021. We loved it anyway — and that "one weekend valve cover gasket job" that somehow turned into three weekends, a borrowed engine hoist, and a parts order from four different vendors is the most STI owner experience that ever existed.

The real question nobody wants to answer: did the STI get worse, or did we just get older and start caring about NVH and insurance premiums?

Grail or nail? One word answers only.
