Where were you when the sky went dark? 🌚🌞

On 12 August 2026, the Moon’s shadow crossed Europe, and members of the #yourESA community went out to see it for themselves.

First up: an animation from @marprol, shot through a solar telescope in Galicia. It shows the eclipse building, frame by frame, right up until her mount disconnected and her laptop overheated. That’s eclipse chasing for you. Things go wrong, and you keep shooting anyway.

From there, swipe through to see the rest. Some of the community travelled a long way to stand in the path of totality. Others waited with a filter and a lot of patience, watching the Sun thin down to a curve. Between them, they used telescopes, telephoto lenses, even a Polaroid, to hold onto a few minutes that don’t come round very often.

Emanuele ran two rigs, one tuned to hydrogen-alpha light, the other a straightforward telescope and camera pointed at the low Sun. This is that second shot, the Sun sinking towards the sea over Sicily, most of its disc gone, wrapped in the deep red only a sunset eclipse can give you.

Miguel was one of five photographers invited to a private viewing event in Burgos, and this is what he came home with. He blended nine exposures into one frame, shot from a hotel balcony during the 104 seconds of totality. The result: the Sun’s corona, stretched out across a dark sky.

Alex took a different route entirely. No digital sensor, just a  @polaroid 195 camera loaded with black and white film. He captured every phase of the eclipse on a single frame, filter on for the partial stages, filter off to catch totality and the landscape around him. As far as he knows, it’s the first eclipse sequence ever shot on Polaroid.

@mehmet.erguen, Atienza, Guadalajara, Spain

Mehmet caught totality from Atienza, close enough to the Moon’s edge to pick up the red flares of the Sun’s chromosphere breaking through. Shot on a Nikon Z8 with a 18-600mm lens, tracked on a Wave 100i mount. That thin red line is real. It’s the Sun’s edge, peeking round the Moon.
