## Caption

This hand-colored woodblock print on cloth depicts Mount Wutai, or Wutaishan, in Shanxi Province, China. Revered as the earthly abode of Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, Mount Wutai became an international Buddhist pilgrimage center, attracting travelers from across Asia.

Look closely and you’ll find more than 150 sites across the mountain, including monasteries, temples, villages, sacred objects, and places associated with historic and miraculous events. Winding paths and tiny travelers suggest possible pilgrimage routes.

Emphasizing the interconnectedness of the Himalayas, the Tibetan Plateau, and Inner Asia, this print was carved at Mount Wutai in 1846 by a Mongolian monk named Lhundrup, depicts a Chinese sacred mountain, reflects a strong Tibetan Buddhist influence, and includes dedicatory inscriptions in Mongolian, Tibetan, and Chinese.

Swipe to look more closely at the details in this hand-colored woodblock print. It’s also on view at the Seattle Asian Art Museum (seattleartmuseum) in their permanent collection exhibition "Boundless: Stories of Asian Art,” as part of a long-term loan partnership.
