One of the more important AI charts I have seen recently.

Pew Research analyzed roughly 490,000 English language webpages and found something revealing about where AI is actually penetrating the internet.

In 2026 samples, 9.4% of .com webpages showed significant signs of AI authorship or editing.

For .org domains it was 4.6%.

For .edu, just 1%.

For .gov, 0.8%.

The obvious takeaway is that the commercial internet is automating first.

But I think the deeper story is incentives.

Commercial websites live inside an attention economy. They need more articles, more product descriptions, more search visibility, more engagement and lower production costs. AI is extraordinarily good at increasing the supply of all of those things.

Universities and governments have different incentives. They also carry greater institutional friction around accuracy, accountability, policy and approval.

And there is an even bigger number buried in Pew’s research.

Among webpages with identifiable publication dates published after ChatGPT arrived, 35% showed significant signs of AI authorship or substantial AI editing.

That does not mean 35% of the internet was written entirely by AI. AI detection remains probabilistic.

But the direction of travel is unmistakable.

The internet began as humans publishing information for other humans.

We are rapidly constructing something different.

A web where machines increasingly help write the information, machines increasingly organize the information and machines increasingly decide which information humans see.

The commercial layer is simply getting there first.
