Founded at the confluence of two major rivers, Sacramento raised its buildings and streets in the 1860s and 1870s to prevent extreme flooding. The raising of buildings created underground spaces that served a variety of purposes for businesses. How did people raise those buildings though?

In this video, Aly discusses the building jacks that would have been used to literally jack up the buildings to the new street level. This was discussed in the underground space of the B.F. Hastings building in Old Sacramento.
