The current outbreak is a reminder that food safety isn’t just about what’s on your plate. It’s about whether people have access to safe, affordable food, reliable information, and a government that actually invests in resources to protect public health.

So start with your own community:

1️⃣ Educate your people. Check recalls, share reliable food safety information, and make sure your friends and family know which foods to avoid.

2️⃣ Know your food landscape. Learn what food deserts are, and find out whether your neighborhood is one. Access to healthy food shouldn’t depend on your ZIP code.

3️⃣ Follow the bigger story. Federal staffing cuts and reduced oversight have raised serious concerns about the country’s ability to prevent and respond to foodborne illness outbreaks.

4️⃣ And organize. Because we deserve more than reacting to the next recall. We deserve a food system that puts our health before corporate interests and makes safe, healthy food accessible to everyone.

Check your fridge. Check on your people. Then get organized. Community care is political. And building a healthier community for all of us takes all of us.
